We have started work on a major heritage building restoration project at Hugh Stewart House on the University of Nottingham’s University Park campus.
Hugh Stewart House is one of the University’s most distinctive buildings. The Grade II listed Gothic manor house forms part of the Hugh Stewart Hall complex and operates as a hotel for university visitors, conference delegates, weddings and weekend breaks.
We were initially awarded a contract to redecorate all the timber and metal windows but before work began, we appointed ASBC Heritage & Conservation Specialists to carry out a detailed condition survey (as part of the tender specification) to ensure the work would provide a long-lasting result.
The 48-page survey revealed that many of the windows required specialist repairs before they could be decorated. Further investigations into the building’s stonework and masonry also identified a significant programme of conservation work, including repairs to the masonry, finials and turrets.
Following the surveys, the University expanded the project from a redecoration contract to a heritage repair, restoration and decoration scheme with a contract value of £250,000. Rather than simply repainting the windows, carrying out the necessary repairs first will help protect the building for many years to come and provide a far more durable solution.
Work started on site in June with the erection of scaffolding.
Allsopp Construction is acting as Principal Contractor, coordinating the construction phase and managing the programme of works. This gives the University a single point of responsibility for planning and overseeing the project, coordinating the specialist contractors and ensuring the work is carried out safely and efficiently throughout the restoration.
The specialist repairs to the timber windows, stonework and masonry are being carried out by ASBC Heritage & Conservation Specialists.

Hugh Stewart House is one of five live projects that we are currently delivering for the university, continuing our long-standing working relationship across the University’s estate.
