The days are getting longer and a little warmer, with a definite feel of spring in the air. Despite the challenging weather over the past two months, work continues at Cloud Lodge, Mapleton.
During the worst conditions, we focused on internal preparation for the steels that will support the first floor. Originally, the plan included six new structural steels, but following further assessment, we installed 11 in total to ensure the integrity of the structure.
One unexpected challenge was a load-bearing wall in the oldest part of the bungalow, which was found to be of poor quality and unable to support the new floor. This required a full replacement—an issue that could not have been foreseen before work began. Additionally, to reinforce the remaining existing walls, we injected resin into the foundations for added strength.
Insulation & Heating Upgrades
The ground floor has now been insulated and overclad, with the addition of underfloor heating, an agreed extra introduced during the project. The original oil-fired boiler is being replaced with a state-of-the-art air source heating system, and solar panels will be installed once the new roof is complete. These improvements will make the home far more energy-efficient, warmer, and better ventilated, addressing previous issues of cold and dampness.
Preserving Key Features
The client wishes to retain the existing kitchen and bathrooms, so we’ve carefully removed and stored the kitchen units for reinstallation later. Protective ply boxing has been built inside these rooms to protect them, so they can be restored to their original condition once work is complete.
Structural Progress & Next Steps
The datum line for the new brickwork has been marked out, setting the foundation for the external walls. Floor joists are now being installed, and with the old roof removed, we’re have to make sure that the building is fully tarpaulined every night for protection.
The new first floor will cover the entire footprint of the existing house and include a large master bedroom, a bathroom, a viewing gallery, and a cinema room. Its elevated position offers stunning views, creating the perfect space to enjoy both sunrises and sunsets.
Due to additional works, the programme has been extended by six weeks, with completion now expected in July. A team of four to five is on-site at any given time, ensuring steady progress.
