Derby High is an independent school, located on the outskirts of Derby. The school approached us following a recommendation from our recent work at Repton School.
We were up against the clock on this project. The order was received just two weeks before the start of the new school term, meaning completing the work quickly was a top priority.
The project involved renewing an external first-floor flat roof and the decking that was on top of it.
The existing decking had deteriorated and was unsafe, the two air conditioning units were standing on top of the rotten structure and were at risk of falling.
Our team removed the old decking, cleaned down the flat roof beneath, and built a new treated timber deck. We then fitted a durable ‘Trex’ composite decking system on top. The air conditioning units were safely removed, the new deck installed, and the units carefully reinstated.
To make the area safer and more practical, we will be installing two types of glazed handrails; clear glazed handrail along the open edge of the glazed section of the building, allowing light to flood into the rooms below.

The final stage of the project, fitting the glass panels, is due to be completed shortly. As the new school term has already begun, this installation will be carried out over a weekend to avoid disruption to students and staff.
This project has transformed a neglected and unsafe area into a safe, modern, and usable outdoor space. Once complete, students will benefit from the opportunity to learn and spend time outside in a secure environment.
