Project Overview

Phoenix is an individual home built on an arrow-shaped side garden plot, sold to a small developer by the owner of the adjacent property. This project, like many during its time, was affected by lockdown, with instruction beginning in 2020. Initially scheduled for completion within 9 months, the timeline extended to 12 months due to delays in material sourcing and challenges with suppliers who were unable to work indoors.

Site and Construction

The sloping nature of the site presented challenges that required extensive groundworks. The multi-level design of the home is a direct response to these challenges, with the dwelling dug into the landscape to create a seamless integration with its surroundings. Gabions were installed as retaining structures, providing both functionality and an impressive natural aesthetic.

From the front, the house appears to be a two-story structure. However, the rear elevation reveals a three-story design, with the ground floor partially sunken into the landscape. This floor houses two ensuite bedrooms and a plant room. The middle floor features an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, along with two additional ensuite bedrooms. The top floor is dedicated to the master suite, which has frameless sliding doors offering panoramic views of the countryside. The exterior area outside the master suite is equipped with walk-on roof lights, adding to the open, airy feel of the space.

Design and Features

The exterior of the building is clad in Siberian Larch and natural stone tiles, with a ‘Sedum’ green roof that contributes to the home’s sustainability. High-spec, triple-glazed Velfac windows ensure superior insulation throughout the property. Inside, the house features a bespoke Stephen Christopher kitchen and utility room, along with a show-stopping, custom-made steel-spined glass and oak staircase, the stairs are balanced elegantly on a single steel beam.

Sustainability and Modern Living

The property is equipped with an Air Source Heat Pump and an MVHR mechanical ventilation system, ensuring fresh air circulation and energy efficiency. The lower ground floor, cut into the bank, seamlessly blends with its surroundings, maintaining the home’s connection to the natural landscape.

Phoenix was built speculatively for a small local developer, with a focus on overcoming the challenges posed by the site’s tricky levels while delivering a striking design that appeals to the open market. The result is a stylish, 5-bedroom home that balances modern living with environmental considerations, without compromising on style.
