We have just completed the £200,000 refurbishment of The University of Nottingham Boathouse. Modernising and improving the facilities for the Universities Rowing Club.
The Boathouse, situated on the banks of the River Trent between Nottingham Forest’s football ground and Lady Bay Bridge, has been home to the club since 1948. It is an attractive Art Deco building, characterised by its white render and white-framed Crittall-style windows.
Project Scope and Delivery
The core of the refurbishment involved upgrades to the building’s structure and systems.
Including:
Asbestos Removal and Roofing: Using a specialist contractor, the team safely removed the existing asbestos cement roof covering and all other Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACMs). A whole new insulated composite roof covering and roof drainage system were then installed.
Energy Efficiency Upgrades: The existing kerosene boiler and fuel storage tank were removed and replaced with new high-efficiency electric boilers, improving the building’s energy performance.
Lighting: The fluorescent lighting in the Ergo Hall (where athletes train on indoor rowing machines) was replaced with new “smart” eco LED lighting and emergency lighting.
Structural and Finish Improvements: Non-structural columns were removed in the Ergo Hall to improve the training layout. The hall received a durable finish with epoxy floor paint. New suspended ceilings were installed in the male changing rooms, and the entire building received a full redecoration of both the interior and exterior façade.
Despite the initial delay for bat surveys, we completed on time with handover on 13 October 2025.
